COME MEET OUR HIGH-SPEED FAMILY

The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is the fastest land animal in the world, reaching a top speed of 110 km/h.

Since the spring of 2013, eight cheetahs—five males and three females—have made their home at our Cheetah Research and Reproduction Centre.

FEMALES

Laini
She is the smallest and the most beautiful of the cheetahs. She has a fiery personality and strong leadership skills. She doesn’t let the others push her around despite her small size. She has a piercing cry and doesn’t like to be separated from her brother, Jua. Her name means “soft.”

Nati (also known as “Peanut”)

Nati was raised by hand and enjoys the company of men but not women. She seems to want to be friends with Laini. She’s mischievous, a glutton and a bit of a klutz.

Malkia

She is the oldest and most impressive of all the cheetahs. She is very independent and has little interest in the zoologists who take care of her. She likes her routine and sleeping in her own bed. Her name means “queen.”

MALES

Pendo

The strongest of the group, Pendo seems even bigger because his best friend Jua is so small. He often makes faces and is the most impressive of the cheetahs. His name means “love.”

Nyota

He is a real charmer. He comes up to the zoologists the most but is not necessarily the most affectionate. He has a great relationship with his brother Kilio, and his name means “star.”

Kilio

You’ll have no trouble spotting Nyota’s brother: look for the Cheetah with the most white at the tip of his tail. He seems to be the bravest and most adventurous, and one day he might become the leader of the group. His name means “cry.”

Jua

He is the smallest of the group. He is more nervous and more alert than the others. He has an irresistible youthful face. He is the Laini’s brother and often communicates with her. His name means “sunshine.”

Haraka

He is the best looking male. He doesn’t have a trace of white fur on his tail. We thought he would be the leader of the cheetahs until they all went out in the large enclosure and Kilio took charge. Haraka still seems to be a good leader because the others all follow him when he changes enclosures. His name means “speed.”
